The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides multiple grants and benefits to the African people struggling with their daily expenses. One such financial support is the Social Relief of Distress grant paid to vulnerable South African citizens.
SASSA SRD Grant Payment Date
The South African government took the initiative to eradicate poverty, and hunger, and bring social stability to the lives of vulnerable South Africans dealing with the rising cost of living, job loss, reduced work opportunities, etc. The SRD grant was introduced during COVID-19 to provide relief to the people amidst the financial crisis caused due to the pandemic.
Since then the SRD grant has become an essential financial support to South Africans in need. This year, the government has even increased the grant seeing the rising inflation. Eligible people receive monthly support via SRD at the end of a week of the month, unlike the other SASSA grants processed on the first week of the month.
The recipients waiting for the November payout can expect the payment between 25 November to 30 November 2024. Some recipients may have already received the SRD payments, however, if you haven’t, have patience you will receive the payment by 30 Nov 2024.
What makes you eligible to receive the SASSA SRD grant?
The South Africans who meet the below eligibility requirements will be eligible to claim the SRD grant:
- You must be a South African permanent citizen or resident or special permit holder/ refugee/ asylum seeker living in South Africa.
- You have no source of income or support, unemployed, or you have lost your job,
- You should be aged between 18 and 60 years to receive the SRD grant
- You do not qualify for any other SASSA grants, for instance, shield support grant,
- Your bank balance should not be over R624 as it means for people who have no financial support
How much will you receive through the 2024 SASSA SRD grant?
In the 2024 budget, the government increased the SRD grant by 5.67% from R350 to R370, which was effective from April 2024. The rise in grants was based on the inflation and rising cost of living to ensure payment was enough for the vulnerable group to survive.
Since then the SRD grant recipients have been receiving the increased payment from the SASSA. Many experts say the government will increase the payment in the future as well and the National treasury experts projected a 19.7 million hike in SRD grants in 2026-27 compared to the current 18.8 million increase in FY 2023-24.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has said the extension in grant payouts for the next year will be finalized after March 2025, so till then the recipients will increase the SRD grant up to R370 payout amount.
How to apply for the SASSA SRD grant?
South Africans dealing with financial crisis and meet the eligibility criteria for SRD grants can submit their SRD application, with the following supporting document or information in hand:
- South Africa Residence Proof
- Your South African ID proof
- Valid mobile number registered in your name
- Bank account info
- Financial situation proof, such as pay slip or bank statement, etc.
TRefugeesor foreign citizens may need to present additional documents, such as a permit to stay in South Africa or a certificate issued by the official authority confirming their South African legal residency.
When you ensure you have all the documents ready with you, you can follow the below steps to complete your SRD application online:
- Visit the official website of the SASSA SRD grant at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/
- Next, you will find the Apply Online option on the homepage click on it to move to the application page.
- On the application page, enter your personal information accurately and cross-check every entry to avoid errors or the chance of application rejection based on incorrect or missing information.
- Now, once you enter all the asked details, click the Agree option,. After that, you will need to enter the valid ID number and click the submit button.
- Next, select the payment option through which you would like to receive the grant and submit the application. After you receive the confirmation message of the SRD application submission on your registered mobile number, consider your application being submitted.
People who cannot apply online can apply for SRD grants by visiting the SASSA offices in person.
What to do if you do not receive the SRD payment during the payment period?
The SRD recipients generally receive the payment in the given week, however, if you still haven’t received the payment from the authority you should take the following actions:
- First, you need to make sure of your eligibility or check the SRD status online to ensure you are still eligible for the payment.
- Secondly, you should cross-check with your registered bank account whether the account is valid or active.
- If you find everything is fine from your end, contact the SASSA via the helpline number at 0800 60 10 11 (call during business days) or visit the nearby office to inquire about your missing or delayed payment.
The SASSA will answer your query and if you deserve to receive the payment there was some issue from their end, they will process the SRD payout ASAP.
