The Labor government has announced a boost in the Disability Living Allowance rates by uprating the work-age benefit. The 1.7% increase in DLA would help people with disabilities with care and mobility costs with PIP (if they are eligible), so UK people should check the rate in boost here.
DLA £749 Payment Boost
In the latest DWP benefit rates updates, the Secretary of State and Work Pension, Liz Kendall has confirmed the rise of benefit rates of PIP and DLA by 1.7%. According to the announcement, the benefit rates will be reflected on the PIP and DLA recipient’s payments from April 2025.
The announced boost in the benefit rates was based on the September CPI increase. The DWP reviews the state pension and government benefit rates annually to ensure they match with inflation and that the recipients receive enough support to tackle the rising cost of living.
The DLA payments have two components: care and mobility and recipients who qualify for any other component or both receive the benefit. The DLA payment processes to recipients every four weeks, and if you get the highest rate of both the care and mobility components of DLA, you will get the maximum amount of £749.80 from April 2025.
The £749 payment boost is the potential boost for someone who qualifies for the highest rate of the care and mobility component. The beneficiaries should know the actual increase from person to person may vary depending on the component they qualify for and the rate of their difficulty.
DLA New Rates Effective from April 2025
Now, based on the 1.7% boost effective from April 2025, the DLA recipients will receive the following payments:
Care component
- The lowest Weekly rate for the level of help when you need to prepare meals would rise to £29.20 from £28.70 (current rate).
- The middle weekly rate would rise to £73.89 from £72.65 (current rate) when you need constant or frequent supervision during the day or night.
- The highest weekly rate would rise to £110.40 from £108.55 (current rate) when you need constant supervision of someone for day and night or when you have only 12 months to live.
Mobility Component:
When you need assistance to move around, you cannot walk a short distance or are ill to walk, you qualify for the mobility component. When you have no legs or are assessed as 100% or at least 80% blind you can also avail the mobility component. Here are the DLA rates that you will receive from April 2025:
- The lower weekly rate will rise to £29.20 from £28.70 when needing guidance or supervision to move outdoors.
- The higher rates will rise to £77.04 from £75.75 when you have severe walking difficulty.
The raise with a 1.7% boost will grant a maximum of £187.44 extra payments in a week when the recipients qualify for care and mobility components at higher rates, which amounts to the four-week maximum pay of £749.
Who receives the DLA payment?
People in the UK who meet the following eligibility criteria would qualify for the DLA benefit for their child:
- Your child’s age should be under 16 and you must be living in England and Wales
- The child should have cleared the DLA assessment for the benefit and used it to determine the component of the payments.
- The child’s disability conditions must have lasted for at least 3 months and are expected to last for more than 6 months.
- You meet the UK residency rules, such as you are a permanent citizen or come in the qualified alien category, etc.
The Citizens must have known the DLA ended as a government is replacing many benefits with other benefits, and DLA is one such benefit. So, if you already received DLA, your claim on DLA will end, so to receive the benefit you must apply for the PIP/ Adult Disability Payment.
How would you know your DLA claim is ending?
The DLA recipients would receive a letter from the DWP about their DWP claim ending and what they need to do to apply for the PIP or Adult Disability Payment to continue receiving the benefits.
As per the DLA guidelines, the recipients who were born on or before 08 April 1948, will continue to receive the DLA, however, for the other recipients, the DLA claim would end. The letter for the DLA claim ends will be sent by the authority around 20 weeks before your claim ends.
So, if you haven’t received the notice, you don’t need to do anything as you will continue receiving the benefit, however, in the due time you haven’t received the notice, you can inquire about the DLA claim to DWP by calling the department.
Changes to report to receive the DLA payments
The DLA recipients should report the following changes via Disability Service Centre if any of them happen to receive the appropriate payments based on circumstances:
- When there are changes in the level of help you need in caring or mobility.
- When you have been admitted to a hospital or care home for more than a month
- When you plan to shift to a new place or foreign country for more than 4 weeks.
- When you change your bank details and address, or when your doctor’s changes.
- When your medical professional diagnoses your disability can cause your life and you may live for only 12 months or less.
- When you are imprisoned for any criminal activity or held in detention.
The UK government has increased the DLA and PIP benefits with other benefits by a 1.7% increase from April 2025 to ensure people have enough support. The recipients should check out the DLA benefits and if they receive DLA payments they must apply for Adult Disability Payment or PIP based on the notice.
